Introduction to Steel Structure
Structural steel is a type of steel used to make building materials
of various shapes. Many structural steel shapes take the form of
elongated beams with specific cross-sectional profiles. Standards
in most industrialized countries regulate the shape, size, chemical
composition, mechanical properties such as strength, storage
methods, etc. of structural steel.
Most structural steel shapes, such as I-beams, have a high area
second moment, which means they are very stiff in cross-sectional
area and can therefore withstand high loads without excessive sag.
