    Steel grades used in pipes

    carbon steel

Carbon steel accounts for about 90% of total pipe production. They consist of relatively small amounts of alloying elements and are generally weaker when used alone. Due to their adequate mechanical properties and machinability, their cost may be lower and they may be more suitable especially for low stress applications. A lack of alloying elements reduces the suitability of carbon steels for high pressure applications and extreme conditions, so they become less durable under high loads. Probably the main reason why carbon steels are preferred for pipes is their advanced ductility and non-bending properties under load. They are commonly used in the automotive and marine industries, as well as in oil and gas transportation. A500, A53, A106, A252 are carbon steel grades available as seamed or seamless

    Stainless steel

Stainless steel can also be included in the alloy steel series. The main alloying element in stainless steel is chromium, which varies between 10-20 weight percent. The main purpose of adding chromium is to give the steel stainless steel properties by preventing corrosion. Stainless steel pipes are often used in extreme conditions where corrosion resistance and high strength are critical, such as in the marine industry, water purification, pharmaceutical and oil and gas industries. 304/304L and 316/316L are stainless steel grades available for pipe production. The 304 grade has good corrosion resistance and strength; due to the low carbon content, the 316 series has lower strength and can be welded

    Galvanized steel

Galvanized pipes are steel pipes that have been treated with a zinc coating to prevent corrosion. Zinc coating prevents corrosive substances from corroding pipes. It used to be the most common type of pipe in water supply lines, but due to the labor and time involved in cutting, threading, and installing galvanized pipe, it is no longer used much, except for limited maintenance purposes. These types of pipes range in diameter from 12 mm (0.5 in) to 15 cm (6 in). They are 6 meters (20 feet) long. However, galvanized pipes for water distribution can still be seen in larger commercial applications. A significant disadvantage of galvanized pipe is its 40-50 year lifespan. Although a zinc coating covers the surface and prevents external substances from reacting with the steel and corroding it, if the substance being conveyed is corrosive, the pipe may begin to corrode from the inside. Therefore, it is very important to control and upgrade galvanized steel pipes in a certain period of time

    Pipe type

According to the manufacturing method, pipes are divided into two categories: seamless pipes and seamed pipes. Seamless tubes are formed in one stage during rolling, but seamed tubes require a welding process after rolling. Due to the geometry of the weld, seamed pipes can be divided into spiral welded and straight welded. Although there is debate about whether seamless steel pipe is superior to seamed steel pipe, both seamless steel pipe and welded steel pipe manufacturers can produce steel pipes that provide high quality, reliability and corrosion resistance. When determining the type of piping, the main focus should be on the specification and cost aspects of the application

    seamless pipe

Seamless tubes are usually made in complex steps, starting with drilling a hollow from a billet, through cold drawing and cold rolling processes. In order to control the outside diameter and wall thickness, the size of seamless type is more difficult to control than welded pipe, and cold working improves mechanical properties and tolerances. The most significant advantage of seamless pipes is that they can produce thick wall thicknesses. Since they have no welds, they are considered to have better mechanical properties and corrosion resistance than seamed pipes. In addition, seamless pipes are expected to achieve better ovality or roundness. They are generally preferred for use under extreme environmental conditions such as high loads, high pressures and high corrosiveness

    seamed tube

Welded steel pipe is made by welding the rolled steel plate through a seam or a spiral seam. There are different methods of manufacturing welded pipes depending on the overall size, wall thickness and application. Each method starts with a hot billet or flat strip of steel, then pipes are made by stretching the hot billet and pressing the edges together and sealing them with a weld. Compared to seamless pipes, seamed pipes have tighter tolerances but thinner wall thicknesses. Shorter lead times and lower costs may also be the reasons why seamed pipes are better than seamless ones. However, the finish of the inner and outer surfaces of the pipe should be controlled during production as the weld may constitute a sensitive area that may be suitable for any crack propagation and cause the pipe to break
